Fully Staff Our Schools

Smaller Class Sizes and Caseloads
All students deserve a well-rounded, joyful education in well-resourced schools. That means smaller class sizes and access to counselors, nurses, and mental health professionals for every student.

Safe and Stable Schools

Stability AND Safety Our Students Deserve
Layoffs, funding cuts, school closures, and the threat of ICE around school campuses disproportionately harm our most vulnerable students and bring chaos to our school communities. Students deserve more resources, not less. Yet, 2,000 educators were threatened with layoff notices last year. Our students and communities deserve robust, stable, and fully funded schools that encourage and nurture students’ success.

Competitive Wages and Benefits

To Recruit and Retain Quality Educators
There are thousands of vacancies across California public schools. Educators should be able to own a home, raise a family, and thrive in our communities. It’s time for pay and benefits that match the essential role educators have in our society.

Our plan to win

Every school deserves full funding to provide students with the resources they need, and every educator deserves a living wage that reflects their vital role in our communities. With your support, we can ensure both educators and students have the support they need to thrive.

Union educators from school districts across the state are organizing alongside parents, students, and communities to win.

Our shared demands were developed by educators across California.

Educators in local union chapters then voted to commit to working together to win our shared demands.

School communities large and small will organize together to win in 2025 and beyond. Our We Can't Wait Campaign will:

1.

Demand that school districts prioritize resources to support students and fully staff our schools.

2.

Unite to improve state funding for our schools so our students and educators get the support they deserve.

Join Teachers in the fight for quality public ed
As educators, we are fighting to defend and protect high-quality public education across our state. Our schools are underresourced and underfunded, teachers cannot afford to live where they work, and the lack of competitive wages are pushing educators out of the profession. As a result, the quality of learning and care across our public education system is in crisis; but our students and teachers deserve more. Parents and teachers both want our students to thrive. This campaign allows parents and caregivers to collaborate with teachers to win this fight for quality public education.

Campaign FAQs:

What is the We Can't Wait Campaign?

Over 80,000 educators across the State of CA, serving 1 million students in 32 school districts coming together to demand that school districts prioritize fully staffed schools, competitive wages and benefits to recruit and retain quality educators, and safe, stable schools where every child can thrive.

Can school districts afford this?

Yes, the school districts have $23.5 billion in revenues. California is also the 4th largest economy in the world, yet ranks 33rd in the nation for per-pupil spending. CA schools and families deserve fully staffed and resourced schools. The lack of State funding disproportionately affects our most vulnerable students, including immigrant students, unhoused students, LGBTQIA+ students, and students of color.

How are students and schools currently being affected?

Our current school system in California is in crisis. All students deserve a well-rounded, joyful education in well-resourced schools. That means smaller class sizes and access to counselors, nurses, and mental health professionals for every student.

Students deserve more resources, not less. Yet, 2,000 educators were threatened with layoff notices last year. Layoffs, cuts, and school closures disproportionately harm our most vulnerable students and bring chaos to our school communities.

There are thousands of vacancies across California public schools and educators are leaving the profession in record numbers due to the lack of resources and support. Many educators are not able to own a home, raise a family, and thrive in the communities where they teach. In order to teach the next generation, we need to recruit and retain quality educators. It’s time for pay and benefits that match the essential role educators have in our society.

How will this affect me and my family?

What should you expect from schools or from your child’s educational journey?

What We Stand For:

1. Fully-funded, fully-staffed public education for all students, including support for neighborhood community schools.

2. Racial justice in LAUSD that undoes historic, and current, impacts of systemic racism, supports Black student achievement, eliminates school police, and creates positive supports for students, families and educators based upon restorative practices.

3. A democratic process and oversight for all schools that receive public funding to ensure student success, educator support, and parental/family involvement that includes each participant having a voice in the process.

4. Uplifting high standards and expectations for students and educators, allowing them to fully participate in their educational lives.

5. Advocating for highest-need students to receive the resources and opportunities they need, which are also tailored to their community’s needs.

6. Equally excellent educational opportunities and access for students of all races, socioeconomic backgrounds, geographic areas, and special needs through innovation and collaborative learning.

What can parents/community members do?

Parents and community members can be instrumental in demonstrating support and power on behalf of students and their educators. There are many different ways to show up for this fight for a better future.

Additional Resources

We’ve also included additional educational resources to help explain how our fight for public schools today is shaped by previous fights for social justice, educational justice, and labor organizing rights.

The videos below detail the history of housing inequality, known as redlining, in our communities, and student civil rights activism, which has had lasting impacts on our schools today.

Why We Can’t Wait

“We have a staffing crisis, and it’s worst in areas where teachers are needed the most. If we want to fully staff our schools, we need a living wage.”
Kyle Weinberg
San Diego Education Association
“Our students deserve smaller class sizes that allow them to thrive and feel safe at school.”
Kampala Taiz-Rancifer
Oakland Education Association
"It's really important for us to stand together and say that just because you're a teacher in a different district, it doesn't mean you deserve less."
Nico Vaccaro
Natomas Teachers Association
"Our Students deserve stability, fully staffed schools, and educators who can thrive in the communities they serve. Every day, UTR members go above and beyond to give our students the education they deserve, but we cannot do it alone. We Can't Wait for tomorrow's promises- we need action today. Together we are building a movement that puts students and educators before billionaires and budget cuts."
Francisco Ortiz,
United Teachers of Richmond
"We struggle to fill positions in part because of the burden of our health benefits. Some of our members have out-of-pocket costs upwards of $1,400 per month, while a school district next door has fully covered benefits. To recruit and retain quality educators, TRUSD needs to make a paradigm shift in how it prioritizes spending. Our students can't wait, our teachers can't wait. The time is now!"
